An defense official has stated that the MoD is actively looking into the potential security risks posed by Chinese vehicles, and staff have been instructed to avoid talking about classified information in any vehicles.

Safety Guidance for MoD Staff

In a recent interview on a radio station, Luke Pollard addressed claims that MoD officials have been instructed not to discuss secret material while travelling in Chinese vehicles.

He stated that the MoD is “investigating” Chinese vehicles within its vehicle pools, however noted that security is a issue in every modern cars.

We have a collection of tens of thousands of cars in the MoD and Chinese ones account for a very small number.
But whether you’re driving a vehicle from China or a non-Chinese car, what we’ve asked our staff is not to plug MoD technology into their car, not to have discussions at a classified classification in any kind of vehicle, due to the growing risks of eavesdropping that are present in all automobile, to restrict those confidential talks in secure locations. This is a wise and reasonable thing for anyone concerned about safety.

After it was suggested that it would be prudent for the ministry to cease using all Chinese vehicles, Pollard responded: That is precisely what we’re investigating at the present time.”

Broader Defence Context

The revelation comes as claims from Scandinavian countries have warned the United Kingdom to the existence of dual-use shutdown mechanisms in Chinese electric buses, which could allow China to switch off buses and bring chaos to transport systems.

Additionally, a Russian spy ship was reportedly directing laser beams at Royal Air Force aircrew, labeled a “extremely risky” act by government representatives.

This wider defence situation highlights the significance of robust protocols and vigilance in all areas of official operations, including vehicle usage to discussions practices.
