Federal Reserve Cuts Interest Rates for Second Instance This Year During Financial Instability

The US central bank reduced interest rates on midweek, representing the second rate cut this year amid financial volatility stemming from the government closure and trade duties.

Decision Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve

The move to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs even with persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Highlights Labor Market Changes

In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release reads. “Price increases has risen and remains moderately high.”

Federal Closure Complicates Fed’s Job

The ongoing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Affects Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve typically analyzes BLS data to determine labor market conditions, including the number of new jobs added to the market and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in the previous month.

The number of jobs created to the market in the summer month was down by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Show Ongoing Slowdown

Though BLS was scheduled to release September’s job market report in early October, it suspended its publication when the closure started. Employment data company ADP reported earlier this month that the business segment cut 32,000 positions in September, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has declined quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman said recently, which he had earlier said comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Shows Moderate Increase

Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the bureau still released its price statistics for last month that indicated that prices are going up, albeit gradually. Prices rose three percent over the last year, the highest since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
