EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US on five European individuals involved in combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in condemning the move.

The bans were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the rules are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.
